General Questions about Canada

What Currency is used in Canada?
The Canadian Dollar is our currency - however you DO NOT NEED to exchange your American money. But I would suggest that you do. Most retailers, restaurants, hotels etc. charge a premium of about 5% over what the current bank rates are. If you want to get the full benefit of the very strong US dollar I would go to a bank and exchange your money there. Credit cards are also a good way to go as they do not charge a large premium.

What is the Exchange rate?
The exchange rate has been good for the USA fliers. The Canadian dollar is worth about about the same as the US, thus $1.00 US dollar is worth about $1.00 Canadian. The launch fees will be in US dollars as that is what I pay to TRA, however you will find that restaurant meals, hotels etc. are roughly the same price as in the US.
Check out today's Exchange Rate .

What is the main highway into Canada from the US, and what is the speed limit?
The major highway I think most of you will take is Interstate 15—runs north right starting from the Mexican border, and takes you straight to Lethbridge (the host city). Others may enter at other points but I suspect most of you will take I-15. Speed limits are in kilometers per hour—and for quick reference most of the highways you will travel have a speed limit of 100kph (roughly 63 mph) or 110 kph (roughly 70 MPH) Once inside the cities 50 kph is (roughly 30 MPH).

What is the main language in Canada?
We have two languages in Canada English is the official language and French is our second Language, In Alberta English is about all you will hear (other than the odd ethnic restaurant).

What is the legal drinking age?
In Alberta the legal age is 18—and yes, MGD, Bud, Coors Lite and others are all available - but you should try the local favorite which is Kokanee Beer.

Launch Event Questions

Will there be an experimental day?
At this time, there isn't one planned.

Will all Certification Levels be accepted?
Yes this event is hosted by TRA Alberta prefecture 115 and TRA, NAR and CAR Certification will be accepted.
This event is TRA insured, so TRA rules must be strictly followed as well as CAR rules (due to being in Canada).

Can we bring Black powder across the border?
Yes you can in canisters of 500 g(1 lb)or less to a maximum of 8 kg or 17lbs and should be in the original tins. Please Download this and carry it with you when crossing the border if you are bring black powder into Canada.

Can we bring Thermalite across the border?
NO YOU CAN NOT! However some thermalite (at least the Brazilian version) will be available from Gemini Rocketry onsite.

What do we need to get back into the United States?
The best piece of ID you could have is a Passport.  Failing that, please ensure that you have your Birth Certificate along with one other piece of photo ID.  Just having a US driver's is no longer sufficient.  Having too many documents is better than not enough.

What do we need to get our unused motors back into the United States?
quoted from 27 CFR Part 555.108
Sec. 555.108 Importation

a) Explosive materials imported or brought into the United States by a
licensed
importer or holder of a user permit may be released from customs custody to
the
licensed importer or holder of a user permit upon proof of his status as a
licensed importer or holder of a user permit furnishing to the customs
officer
a certified copy of his license or permit. (See section 555.103)

OR for us that don't read legalese.
IF you are either

A) A Licensed Importer
Many of the dealers out there, especially if they deal with CTI will
have
these

OR

B) A LEUP Holder

All you need is to have a CERTIFIED COPY of your permit with you and you are
home free.

Remember that the easiest thing to do is to preorder the motors that you
will need from one of the venders and pick them up when you arrive at the
LDRS site. But if for some reason you cannot fly them, you now at least
have what you need to get them back home yourself or you can make
arrangements with a motor importer. If you are not a LEUP holder, I assume
it would be easy enough to find someone who can help you out.

If there are any questions, please contact Max Baines.

What are the rules on smoking at the event?
IT IS AGAINST CANADIAN LAW to smoke with in 30 feet of a rocket motor. Violators will have their range privileges removed!"
Can we transport our rocket motors, black powder, e-matches, on the airplane with us?
NO YOU CAN NOT!
It is illegal to transport these types of products on passenger aircraft in Canada or the United States.
